Printopia is a fantastic piece of software which we strongly recommend for anyone who wants to AirPrint but does not have one of those fancy new AirPrint-capable printers.

It not only lets you print papers but it also allows you to print items as a PDF file to your computer or Dropbox folder. Same goes to ones connected via an Airport.
It is connected via USB to a computer that is not mine, but I am still able to print to it from my iOS devices, through my computer, with Printopia. The awesome thing about Printopia is that it not only works wirelessly to printers connected to your computer via USB but works on network printers too.įor instance the printer I use is a network printer. Just click the print button in any AirPrint supported application (Safari, Mail, iWork etc.) and your printers will show up. In terms of actually printing from your iOS device you use the same method Apple wanted you to use all along. Simply download the software (which does not mess with your file system!), click and install, and you’re done. In short, Printopia allows any iOS user with an AirPrint-capable device to print. Printopia is by far the best piece of software you can get right now for your Mac if you have an AirPrint-capable iOS device. There are 2 alternatives to Printopia for iPad, iPhone, Mac and Windows. Add unlimited virtual printers to save print-outs to your Mac as PDF files' and is an app in the system & hardware category. AirPrint only works on a few select HP printers which leaves most of us in the dark for one of the slickest features in iOS 4.2. Run Printopia on your Mac to share its printers to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Then as a few weeks passed and we learned that this was not the case. I’ll give you one guess as to what it does.When Steve Jobs announced AirPrint back on that day in early September excitement rang as iOS users finally got the ability to print from their device.

Update: TUAW also spotted a new free app for Mac called AirPrint Hacktivator. You’ll have to enable AirPrint on your Windows firewall, but that’s about it for the restrictions. The free app lets you send print jobs to any shared printer on your network.

Print Central, Print n Share, Print Bureau. AirPrint Activator is a free download, although the developer politely asks for a small donation, making it a much more inexpensive option than the 20 Printopia. There are apps in the app store that claim to work virtually any wireless printer. It doesn’t matter if it’s physically connected to your computer via a USB cable or through an Airport wireless connection. There are third party applications that you can use for printing if your printer is not AirPrint compatible. Printopia costs $9.95, and lets you print from any printer connect to your Mac… or any printer connected to your network.
On the preference pane, you will find the printers. Printopia gets the job done quite nicely for OS X, while AirPrint Activator works for Windows. Once you download Printopia, it appears as a preference pane inside the system preferences on your Mac. It turns out there are at least two third party apps, however, which will let you send print jobs to any printer connected to your computer. While Apple had originally promised that AirPrint would also work with almost any printer connected to your Mac or PC, that feature isn’t currently available… from Apple.
Unfortunately right now that means that a handful of HP printers work out of the box. Apple’s AirPrint technology is a nifty tool that lets you send print jobs from supported iOS devices including an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 4.2.1 to a supported internet-connected printer.
